What Does a Career in IT Look Like?

Before diving into what a career in IT looks like, I think it’s important to define what IT stands for. IT is an acronym for information technology, which relates to software, hardware, cloud computing, networks, data management, etc. In essence, a project manager oversees projects from conceptualization to completion. They ensure delivery of quality projects in a timely and efficient manner. Also, it’s very important that they have a deep understanding of the the projects they’re working on. Some soft skills that are crucial for managers in any capacity are strong leadership, communication, and organization skills. Additionally, it’s important to note that each project an IT project manager takes on will look different. Therefore, to be successful you must be adaptable to a variety of situations that may come up from project to project.

How Can I start my Career in IT?

To start off, a bachelor’s degree is the first step to jumpstarting a career in IT. Also, it’s important that your major is in a related field to IT such as, computer science or information systems. Some employers may prefer a master’s degree if you’re going for a project manager position. Additionally, it’s important to have some prior experience in the industry before to going for the management position. Most IT project managers start off as a tech, then move up, climbing the corporate ladder to the IT project manager position.
