What Does a Television Producer Do?

A career as a television producer includes writing, producing and reporting on news stories for the public to see. This allows for the opportunity to be a creative storyteller, however it can also be quite busy and chaotic. Producers do not work regular hours, or the regular 9am-5pm. Instead, it’s common for them to work overnights, finding stories and breaking news as they occur.

Education Requirements

While there are no hard set requirements, to begin your career as a television producer, most employers prefer candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in either communications, writing, or journalism. This is not a necessity, many television producers start out as a production assistant and climb the ladder from there. In fact, in the Corporate Minority interview, Ekatte advises aspiring TV producers to get out there and give it a shot. Regardless of education or experience, she recommends you to get out there and learn along the way. Another insight she lends is to create work that your proud of. By consistently putting your best into what you produce, you’ll create work that you’re proud of. Additionally, it’s important to ask questions. Asking questions shows that you’re engaged and interested, and also clarifies any miscommunications.
