Why the Name Corporate Minority?

When thinking of the name of this business (Corporate Minority) I really didn’t want to use the word ‘minority’ because I hate referring to myself as a minority. After much thought and research, I realized the reality is that we are a minority when it comes to the corporate world. It is still shocking and amazing to hear that only 1% of Fortune 500 company CEOs are African Americans. 1%! Really? That’s nothing. Well, I guess it makes sense, as I always hear many friends of mine saying “I’m the only person of color in my program” Or “I’m the only manager that is a person of color at my company”. I chose to run with the name “Minority” because that is what we are in the corporate world, the minority. But it doesn’t have to stay this way and that is the goal of this company: to help change these statistics.

What can we do about this?

We tend to stand up and unite when things are going wrong. I believe it is just as important to unite when things are status quo. We will never see more of our brothers and sisters in these boardrooms unless we help open the door. The door can be opened simply by advice or insight that those who’ve “made it” can share with those still working their way up. The time to stand is now. The Corporate Minority.
