What is Voice Acting?

Voice acting is using your voice to play a character, speak over an ad on the radio, or even become a virtual assistant, like Siri. In essence, it’s providing your voice for use in video games, trailers, commercials, television, etc. However, the art of voice acting goes much further than simply having a nice voice. Similar to acting, voice acting requires you to understand character motivations and storytelling to embody the character.

Steps to Becoming a Voice Actor

While you might want to jump right into voice acting it is important to consider the following steps you have to take before doing so. It’s important to take voice acting classes that can help you hone your craft and learn about the industry. In the entertainment industry it’s important to surround yourself with a successful network of people who can help you advance in your career. This is often one of the biggest barrier of entry to entertainment, not knowing the right people.

Equally important is investing in your own voice actor studio space. Nowadays, having a home studio where you can produce high-quality work is essential to the career. While it may seem daunting, it’s important to have soundproofing or insulation, decent recording equipment, and a quiet space. Remember, this can be built up over-time, while you may start out soundproofing with blankets you can build up to acoustic panels.
