What is an Internal Auditor?

A career as an internal auditor includes objectively reviewing company practices to ensure they’re complying with financial regulations. They evaluate both financial and operational business activities. Their main focus is to find any unlawful practices prior to a company audit by an external source. In order to do this, internal auditors evaluate financial statements, inventory, accounting practices, and other business areas to eliminate errors.

Qualifications For a Career as an Internal Auditor

The most common education requirements are a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. Additionally, becoming a certified public accountant (CPA) can help advance your career and salary. While CPA requirements vary, the general requirements include a bachelor’s degree, one year of experience working under a CPA, and passing the CPA exam. Another certification available is a certified internal auditor (CIA). CIA certification requires passing a four part test, a bachelor’s degree, as well as two years of experience with a career as an internal auditor.
