Corporate Minority Career Blog, What is it?

What is Corporate Minority?

Corporate Minority is a career resource blog dedicated to providing minorities with the tools and resources they need to begin and excel in their professional careers.  As I got higher in my educational and professional journey, I noticed more and more that there were less minorities present. Every one has a different reason or explanation for this clear gap.

My personal belief is that it is due to a lack of resources. The reality is your education and skill can only get you so far. There comes a point in your professional journey where you can’t just rely on your book knowledge or skill to get you in the door. These are the moments I believe minorities get stuck.

This career blog aims to provide minorities with those hidden tips and advice that’s needed to get them a step further. The career advice you don’t necessarily learn in a classroom. For example, when’s the right time to ask for a raise, interview etiquette, certifications and interpersonal skill sets needed for a position.

As a friend always to say you don’t know what you don’t know, well corporate minority is here to put those pieces together and help you find out what you need to know to get to the next level.

So you talked about resources? What resources does Corporate Minority provide?

The Corporate Minority career blog covers all professions. But let me just me just clear this up real quick. I definitely don’t claim to know it all. But with my network of seasoned professionals, my goal is to gather these insights to share with those interested. There are so many people who have already ran the race that we are trying to run. Why not learn from them? We don’t have to make the same mistakes we can learn from their mistakes, experiences and journey. Corporate Minority compiles all of this information about what they wish they would have know, what route would have been a less painful route to take and delivers it to the younger generation in order to help them achieve success.

These tips go over things such as how to get a promotion, when’s the right time to ask for a raise and much more.

What inspired you to start this platform?

I truly do believe that success is not achieved alone. Yes, we have a few wealthy minorities. We have a few women on top, but I want to get to a point where it is a norm to see an African American doctor, or it is a norm to see a CEO that is a woman. Sadly we aren’t there yet. I remember starting my career and being one of a handful of African American women at the company. There was a lady that was a CMO at a company nearby and not only was she African American, but she also was a marketing professional. I remember hearing about her and getting extremely excited. Like yea, I got a ‘sista’ who can be my mentor and give me the career advice I needed to succeed.

I boldly went down to meet her and my goodness, she was not messing with me. I mean got her schedule down and would randomly bump into her at the coffee shop; literally, she was not messing with me at all. Eventually, I gave up and sought out another mentor. My mentor ended up looking nothing like me. And looking back all of my mentors outside of family none of them have looked like me. Race and gender should not be a factor in choosing a mentor but just thinking about it blew my mind.

As I thought more about it I realized that unfortunately, minorities sometimes have that ‘crab mentality’. I made a decision at that point that I never want to be that way. No matter how busy or successful I get I want to be able to go back and help those in need. Corporate Minority allows not only me to do that but others that are interested. We get further together than we do on our own and we need to be the change that we desire to see.

Where can we find Corporate Minority’s career resources?

We have a new career blog article, covering various professions, posted weekly on our site corporateminority.com. We are on all social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube). I’m also excited to be starting a vlog series with our brand ambassador. This vlog series can be looked at as a break from the celebrity gossip and negative news. We’ll be discussing professional topics, interviewing seasoned professionals, giving well researched advice and a lot more. Make sure you like, comment and subscribe to our channel. We’d love to hear from you and do consider career topics from our subscribers. So, let us know if there’s a topic you’d like discussed or career advice you need.
