Before we dive deep into how to start a career as a record producer, it’s important to know what a record producer is.

What is a Record Producer?

Essentially, a record producer is someone who oversees the creation of a song from start to finish. Record producers bring on a team of people who will bring the song to life, this may range from a guitarist to a publisher. Record producers begin working on a song during pre-production and offer feedback to the artist to get the song right. Once in the studio, record producers help experiment with additional instruments, vocals, beats, etc. There is a business side to this career field as well. Record producers often have to work with label executives to make a profitable song. It’s all about finding a balance between artistry and profitability.

Starting a Career as a Record Producer

We interviewed record producer Chris Umana, who shared his insight on three tips on starting a career as a record producer.

  1. Start Early

Because advancement in the music industry is far and few between, it is important to get your foot in the door as soon as possible. A lot of record producers began as assistants and worked their way up over time.

2. Start playing instruments

If you don’t already, start playing instruments. Knowing how to play helps you understand what’s happening in the music. This is important when offering notes and critiques to the artist.

3. Build a Great Team

Lastly, it’s important to build a great team that you can rely on when making music. Umana notes that a management team is just as important as having a great lawyer and a great publisher.
