What Does a News Producer Do?

A career as a news producer includes collaboration and networking with journalists and reporters to prepare daily news stories. To elaborate, news producers work behind the scenes to find and produce stories that will be both entertaining and informative for their audience. Additionally, it’s worth noting that news producers often work long and irregular hours, in comparison to the standard 9am-5pm. The Corporate Minority interviewee, Chris Ruffin Jr., states that he typically works from 11pm – 7am. During this time, he works on creating stories for the next news cycle.

What Qualifications are Required for a Career as a News Producer?

The majority of news producers at least hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or another related program. When entering this field, most news producers begin as production assistants, and work their way up to becoming a news producer. In the entertainment industry, networking is the key to success. Therefore, building a large personal and professional network of people in the entertainment industry will often lead to a multitude of opportunities and build you a career as a news producer.
