Journalist keep our communities informed, they give a voice to the voiceless,  and they hold those in authority accountable. Here are four tips that I’ve found useful, and they could help you in your broadcast journalism career.

  1. Stay informed

News never sleeps, and the constant stream of what sometimes feels like endless information can be overwhelming, but do your best to stay on top of what’s happening around you. A mentor once suggested that I read two national papers and one local paper a day.

  2. Be fair, and keep your opinions to yourself

Journalism is not about you, or how you feel. Your job is to present the facts with no biases attached. Use your energy in useful ways. Find people who are impacted by what you are passionate about and share their viewpoints, but always present both sides of the story. If you believe someone you are interviewing is not being honest, dig deeper, and find a way to uncover the truth.

  3. Be ethical and authentic

Basically, stay in your lane and be true to yourself. Do what you know in your heart is right at all times, and don’t get sucked into the comparison game. Everyone’s journey is different. If you’re tenacious and you set goals, you’ll reach them, and you’ll feel good about your accomplishments when you achieve them.

  4. Don’t stop learning and never stop climbing

There are so many opportunities to grow in this business. Connect with journalism organizations, reach out to people who are already where you dream of working and read books on how to get better. Never get complacent.

There are many things you will learn on the job, but these are broadcast journalism tips that will keep you on the right track as you navigate the twist and turns of the news industry. Stay focused and don’t forget to have fun.
