Finding a job can be difficult especially because not all jobs are posted online. This is definitely not a myth most jobs are not posted online. There are several reasons companies don’t post all positions the biggest would because of the cost. It’s really expensive to post jobs on job advertising sites. Yes, companies pay to post each position on platforms such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Indeed and etc. I know what you are thinking. “How the heck am I supposed to find a job that’s not even visible?” Here’s some job search advice to help you land a job not posted online.

Here are 4 ways to land a job not posted online:

  1. LinkedIn

Always keep your online resume up-to-date with your current position, job descriptions, certifications, and portfolio. LinkedIn is still one of the primary sources used by recruiters to find qualified candidates. 87% of recruiters surveyed said they used LinkedIn as part of their hiring process. Recruiters may be checking out your page even if you don’t know it, so make sure they like what the see.

  1. Networking Events

Find some networking events in your area or the area you’d like to work in. These are a great opportunity to meet new people in your industry and also broaden your job search to find out about positions that are not always posted online. These events are not difficult to find. You can simply google networking event in the city/industry of interest. You’ll get a bunch of results that you can take advantage of.

  1. Never hurts to just ask

Even if the position you are looking for is not online it does not hurt to reach out the company’s recruiter or hiring manager and inquire. Find the company(s) you want to work with. You can reach out to a recruiter but it would be even better to reach out to the hiring manager directly. Recruiters are not always aware of the needs of every department. Do some research and find the manager of the department you’d like to apply to.

Google and LinkedIn have made it pretty easy to find the manager of the department as well as the email combination the company uses. Once you have this information, email them. In order to land the job, your email should be is personalized to the company. Don’t give into temptation and copy and paste and mass email. You only decrease your chance of the reader caring by doing this.

  1. Use the networks you have

78% of recruiters say they find their best candidates through employee recruiters. You have friends in various companies, reach out to them. Of course narrow down your search to the company or industry you are most interested in. Once you’ve narrowed down your search, find out if you know anyone who works at this company. No? ok, does someone you know someone who works at this company, it could be a 1st or 2nd or even 3rd level connection. (LinkedIn makes this very easy to access).

Don’t keep it a secret that you are looking for a job. Let your friends and family know. This way if they have information that you don’t have or know of an open position they can share it with you.

Finding a job is a difficult journey and the fact that all jobs aren’t posted makes it even more difficult. Taking advantage of these four job search advice will make your search much easier.
